Scrap booking and looking though old pictures has always been fun for me. I love looking back and thinking about how much I have grown through the years by expanding my experiences. The reflection sheets were initiated because I wanted my students to have tangible mementos from their elementary years.
Each year I have every student in my elementary, pre k through 5th grade, complete the 2 page reflection sheets I developed. Each grade is slightly different, but all sheets ask questions to determine students likes/dislikes and well as their strengths/weaknesses. I also think it is fun to ask them what they want to be when they grow-up, because in most cases it changes every year! Depending on age, the students either complete their forms with drawings, words, or a combination of the two.
Each sheet also includes a section for teacher comments. I inform teachers that these sheets will not be returned to the students until the end of their 5th grade year. Teachers are asked to either write complimentary remarks about the student's performance throughout the current school year, or an encouraging remark to inspire them in middle school.
The most important part to this activity is accurately recording student names, and saving all student work until the end of their 5th grade year. I have learned through the years that writing student and teacher names myself have in the long run saved me time. The first year I left writing names to the students, and I often had to look through class lists or ask teachers to determine whose sheet was whose!
Even if a student moves, I do not throw any student work away until the end of their 5th grade year. There have been several cases within our school where a student moves out, but then moves back into the district. It is nice to give the students their reflection sheets from every year they attended my elementary school.
I have found a great time to complete the Reflection Sheets is after PSSA Testing. Many students have free time after completing their PSSA Tests. This is a stress free, but also productive activity.
After our 5th grade promotion ceremony students are given their packet of reflection sheets as well as a cover sheet I created.
